Guardian Angels

Guardian angels are usually seen as something divine - a guardian from heaven or from the invisible spirit world.

The word angel is derived from the Latin angelus meaning "messenger".

City of Angels

In the popular movie City of Angels we see how the people behind this movie have used the word messenger when referring to angels. Dennis Franz plays a a character in this movie who once was an angel who fell in love and made the ultimate choice...he gave up his angel status to become mortal. The characters name is Nathaniel Messenger - Messenger meaning Angel. In addition to Dennis Franz the movie also features Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage and in the movie we see how angels touch us and influence our choices.

Here is a clip from City of Angels:

Angels in religions and in Society

Do we all have guardian angels looking after us as the characters in City of Angels? Does every person has such an angel for the duration of their life on earth, providing protection, as well as guidance from the other side? Are they here on Earth looking after us?

We know that angels exist in many world religions. They may not be called by the same name, but none the less they are angels.

Angels are widely used in Christianity. Angels are created as spirit beings - not as humans. In the Bible they are mentioned many times. Angels announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds (Luke 2:14). An angel rolled away the stone over the tomb of Jesus as described by Matthew 28:2. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. Genesis 28:12 (New International Version)In christianity we also hear about the fallen angel - Satan - which for instance differs from Hinduism who do not believe in complete evil spirits.

In Hinduism the word angel is not used. Instead they are referred to as divine beings. They believe in many more spiritual beings such as demigods and spirits.

We also find angels in the Islamic religion. The Arabic word for angel is malak and its root meaning is "messenger". Angels play an essential role as messengers and intermediaries from Allah to the world. We find the angel Gabriel (Jibraaiyl or Jibril in Arabic) who is the archangel responsible for revealing the Qur'an (Islam's holy book) to Muhammad, verse by verse. Angels do not have a real physical shape.

In Buddhism angels are referred to as devas and they can protect us if we share our good thoughts with them. Devas are spiritual beings - invisible to the physical human eye, but most devas are capable of constructing illusory forms by which they can manifest themselves to the beings of lower worlds.

In Judaism Angels are called malachim and they are messengers of God who help carry out God's work and plans . In Judaism an angel is a spiritual entity in the service of God.

Since ancient times we see that angels exist in many religions.

We also see them in today's society - we find angels everywhere.

We find Guardian Angels in books like Doreen Virtues The Miracles of Archangel Michael or Lorna Byrnes Angels in My Hair.

We find Guardian Angels in movies like the City of Angels (Meg Ryan, Nicolas Cage, Dennis Franz) , Michael (John Travolta) and Defending Your Life (Meryl Streep, Albert Brooks)

We find them in TV shows like the popular prime-time CBS drama Touched by an Angel

We find them on bumper stickers, refrigerator magnets, greeting cards, Christmas cards and so on.

They are everywhere and they are part of our lives.

We usually see them as angels with wings, but we also here stories about angels without wings.

People who say they have seen angels report angels with both wings and with no wings.

Lorna Byrne has always seen Angels

In July 2008 Peter Stanford from the Telegraph in UK did an interview with irish writer Lorna Byrne who is the author of the book Angels in my hair. She has been seeing and talking with Angels since she was a baby. Her are some extract from this very interesting interview:

"I don't always see the angels' wings," admits Lorna Byrne, "but when I do, they are beautiful beyond words. The other day I was with someone and, as she walked into the room, her guardian angel opened up for me and I saw its golden wings in such detail. I could see the feathers individually.""I'm seeing spirals of light behind people," she reports. "Those are the people's guardian angels. We've all got one. They are usually about three paces behind us. And then I'm also seeing the other angels, too, the ones that I call the helpers and teachers. They are white and beautiful. All angels have a human appearance, but that's just for us, so we are not terrified."Angels are not souls of people who have died". I live in a parallel world," she explains, "between spirit world and human world. Angels, you see, are not souls of people who have died, as is sometimes said. They are creatures, another being, a spiritual being. So if you ask me the question of which world I'd find it easier to live in, I'd have to say the spirit world."

Angel seeing abilities

Sue Leonard is a journalist for the Irish paper Independent and in June 2008 she did an interview with Lorna Byrne regarding her "angel seeing abilities":

Lorna Byrne says she talks to angels every day. I was prepared to think she was a little crazy - until I met her face to face, says Sue Leonard.

She goes on to say:

If you met a woman who said that she talked to angels every day, you might be forgiven for raising a discreetly cynical eyebrow. But somehow Lorna Byrne is different. Thousands of people say that she has changed their lives for the better, and a hard-headed publisher believed in her story enough to get her to write a book -- and that book is now right up there near the top of the Irish best-sellers list.

Believing in Angels

Guardian Angels Are Here, Say Most Americans.

In September 2008 Time U.S published an article regarding a poll asking people if they believe in guardian angels or not. According to the poll, which was performed by the Baylor University Institute for Studies of Religion, more than half of all Americans believe they have been helped by a guardian angel in the course of their lives. In a poll of 1700 respondents, 55% answered affirmatively to the statement, "I was protected from harm by a guardian angel."

In the last decade people have become more spiritual. People are being more open minded about the unknown - also with regards to angels. More and more people believe in a higher power and that we go somewhere after our death - and that we are guided by angels when we pass over.

The author of Rising out of Chaos - The New Heaven and the New Earth - Simon Peter Fuller is talking about an awakening global consciousness going on. More and more people are looking inside for answers and becoming more spiritual. Simon Peter Fuller is the founder of Wholistic World Vision, which is an expanding global communications network using the latest technology to re-educate humanity spiritually.

Doreen Virtue: everyone has guardian angels

According to best selling author Doreen Virtue everyone has guardian angels. She says: These angels perform God's will of peace for us all. When we open ourselves to hear our angels' messages, every aspect of our lives become more peaceful.

She has been working with angels since she was a little girl and in her book The Lightworker¬ęs Way she describes her own story and how she began to be a physic and to communicate with angels.Doreen Virtue is a spiritual doctor of psychology and a fourth-generation metaphysician who works with the angelic, elemental, and ascended-master realms in her writings and workshops.
