Guardian Angels

Guardian Angels

Guardian angels are angels that are assigned to protect and guide us.

They are usually seen as something divine - a guardian from heaven or from the invisible spirit world.

The word angel is derived from the Latin angelus meaning "messenger".

Some people claim that if you contact your guardian angel through prayer or meditation at bedtime, just before falling asleep, your guardian angel may send you messages through your dreams.

So are they messengers?

The people behind the popular movie City of Angels seem to think so. They used the word messenger for one of the character in the movie.

Dennis Franz plays an angel-character who falls in love with a mortal and makes the ultimate choice... he gives up his angel status to become mortal too. His characters name is Nathaniel Messenger.

The main characters are played by Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage. In the movie we see how angels touch us and influence our choices.

It´s beautiful movie worth watching. Below is a trailerclip from the movie:

guardian angels in religions

Do we all have guardian angels looking after us as the characters in City of Angels? Does every person has such an angel for the duration of their life on earth, providing protection, as well as guidance from the other side? Are they here on Earth looking after us?

We know that angels exist in many world religions. They may not be called by the same name, but nonetheless they are angels.

CHRISTIANITY:

Angels are widely used in Christianity. Angels are created as spirit beings - not as humans. In the Bible they are mentioned many times. Angels announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds (Luke 2:14). An angel rolled away the stone over the tomb of Jesus as described by Matthew 28:2. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. Genesis 28:12 (New International Version)In christianity we also hear about the fallen angel - Satan - which for instance differs from Hinduism who do not believe in complete evil spirits.

HINDUISM:

In Hinduism the word angel is not used. Instead they are referred to as divine beings. They believe in many more spiritual beings such as demigods and spirits.

ISLAM:

We also find angels in the Islamic religion. The Arabic word for angel is malak and its root meaning is "messenger". Angels play an essential role as messengers and intermediaries from Allah to the world. We find the angel Gabriel (Jibraaiyl or Jibril in Arabic) who is the archangel responsible for revealing the Qur'an (Islam's holy book) to Muhammad, verse by verse. Angels do not have a real physical shape.

BUDDHISM:

In Buddhism angels are referred to as devas and they can protect us if we share our good thoughts with them. Devas are spiritual beings - invisible to the physical human eye, but most devas are capable of constructing illusory forms by which they can manifest themselves to the beings of lower worlds.

JUDAISM:

In Judaism angels are called malachim and they are messengers of God who help carry out God's work and plans. In Judaism an angel is a spiritual entity in the service of God.

Since ancient times we see that angels exist in many religions. We also see them in today's society - we find angels everywhere.

We find guardian angels in books like Doreen Virtues The Miracles of Archangel Michael or Lorna Byrnes Angels in My Hair.

We find angels in movies like The City of Angels (Meg Ryan, Nicolas Cage, Dennis Franz), Michael (John Travolta) and Defending Your Life (Meryl Streep, Albert Brooks), Meet Joe Black (Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins) and many more.

We find them in TV shows like the popular CBS drama Touched by an Angel. We find them on bumper-stickers, refrigerator magnets, greeting cards, Christmas cards and so on.

They are everywhere and they are part of our lives.

We usually see them as angels with wings, but there are also stories about angels without wings.

Many people claim they can see, feel and communicate with these  angels. People like Doreen Virtue, Lorna Byrne and even the Norwegian princess Märtha Louise.

Lorna Byrne has always seen Angels

Lorna Byrne is the author of the book Angels in my hair. She´s been seeing and talking with angels since she was a baby.

In July 2008 Peter Stanford from the Telegraph in UK did an interview with her and is a passage from this interesting interview:

"I don't always see the angels' wings," admits Lorna Byrne, "but when I do, they are beautiful beyond words.

The other day I was with someone and, as she walked into the room, her guardian angel opened up for me and I saw its golden wings in such detail.

I could see the feathers individually. I'm seeing spirals of light behind people," she reports. "Those are the people's guardian angels. We've all got one.

They are usually about three paces behind us. And then I'm also seeing the other angels, too, the ones that I call the helpers and teachers.

They are white and beautiful. All angels have a human appearance, but that's just for us, so we are not terrified.

I live in a parallel world," she explains, "between the spirit-world and the human-world. Angels, you see, are not souls of people who have died, as is sometimes said. They are creatures, another being, a spiritual being.

So if you ask me the question of which world I'd find it easier to live in, I'd have to say the spirit world."

Angel seeing abilities

Sue Leonard is a journalist for the Irish paper Independent and in June 2008 she did an interview with Lorna Byrne regarding her "angel seeing abilities":

Lorna Byrne says she talks to angels every day. I was prepared to think she was a little crazy - until I met her face to face, says Sue Leonard.

She continues:

If you met a woman who said that she talked to angels every day, you might be forgiven for raising a discreetly cynical eyebrow. But somehow Lorna Byrne is different. Thousands of people say that she has changed their lives for the better, and a hard-headed publisher believed in her story enough to get her to write a book - and that book is now right up there near the top of the Irish best-sellers list.

Believing in guardian Angels

Guardian angels are here, say most Americans.

In September 2008 Time U.S published an article regarding a poll asking people if they believe in guardian angels or not. According to the poll, which was performed by the Baylor University Institute for Studies of Religion, more than half of all Americans believe they have been helped by a guardian angel in the course of their lives.

In a poll of 1700 respondents, 55% answered affirmatively to the statement, "I was protected from harm by a guardian angel."

Also, a UK survey ( 2016), which interviewed more than 2,000 people across the country, revealed that one third of Britons believe they have a guardian angel. The research also revealed that 10 per cent of people have experienced the presence of angels, double those who claimed the same in 2010.

The poll, conducted for Bible Society by ICM, also revealed that women are more likely to believe in angels than men, at 39 per cent and 26 per cent accordingly.

In the last decade people have become more spiritual. People are being more open minded about the unknown - also when it comes to the subject of angels. More and more people believe in a higher power and that we "go somewhere" after our death - and that this life-death transition is guided by angels.

Doreen Virtue: everyone has guardian angels

According to best-selling author Doreen Virtue everyone has guardian angels. She says:

These angels perform God's will of peace for us all. When we open ourselves to hear our angels' messages, every aspect of our lives become more peaceful.

She has been working with angels since she was a little girl and in her book The Lightworker´s Way she describes her own story and how she began to be a physic and to communicate with angels.

Doreen Virtue is a spiritual doctor of psychology and a fourth-generation metaphysician who works with the angelic, elemental, and ascended-master realms in her writings and workshops.

She´s the author of more than 20 books about angels, chakras, Crystal Children, Indigo Children, health and diet, and other mind-body-spirit issues, including the best-selling Healing with the Angels and Messages from Your Angels books/angel cards.

In the video below she talks about how guardian angels are always around. They are here to help us find peace.

Norwegian Princess says she can talk to angels

Princess Märtha Louise was born into the Norwegian Royal Family.

In addition to carrying out her official duties as ambassador for the disabled in Norway she is a clairvoyant and says she can speak to angels.

In 2009 she published her first book “Meet Your Guardian Angel“ and later on, in 2014, "The Spiritual Password”.

In an interview on a Scandinavian talk show February 2017 the Princess described that she felt she was not good enough for the role she was born into.

She said she often felt it was very difficult to be a royal person. She could not meet the expectations of others.

"I felt much lonely growing up. I was different. I was born a princess, and I was born extra sensitive".

A few years back she also started an Angel School learning people  how to get in contact with the angels.
